Learning Objective(s) – Skeletal Muscles:
1) To identify and understand the basic functions of muscular system
2) To be able to differentiate between voluntary and involuntary muscles by using examples of human tissue.
3) To learn the main voluntary muscles: Biceps, Triceps, Deltoid, Trapezius, Pectorals, Abdominals, Latissimus dorsi, Quadriceps, Hamstrings, Gastrocnemius
4) To associate how different muscles are used to produce movements in different sports.
Functions and Types of Muscles
Functions of muscles:
1) Movement
2) Stabilize joints
3) Maintain posture
4) Produce heat or thermoregulation
Types of muscles:
1) Voluntary muscles:
- Skeletal muscles – attached to skeletons and striated
2) Involuntary muscles:
- Cardiac muscles – in the walls of the heart and striated
- Smooth muscles – in the walls of the hollow organs of the body (except of the heart) and non-striated
